The Lemmings video game for the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) was a classic puzzle game released in 1991 by publisher Sunsoft. The game was based on the popular real-world myth of lemmings, small rodents which are believed to follow each other off cliffs and into danger. In the game, players must navigate levels filled with obstacles and hazards while guiding a group of lemmings to safety.

The NES version of Lemmings consists of five worlds, each containing eight levels. The objective is to lead a certain number of lemmings from an entrance point at one side of the level to an exit point at the other side within a set time limit. If the player fails to meet this goal, they will lose one life and have to restart the level. Along the way, players can assign various abilities or “skills” to their lemmings in order to help them traverse obstacles such as pits, walls and water. These skills range from digging through dirt to climbing ladders, jumping over gaps or even floating across bodies of water using umbrellas.

In addition to these skills, players also have access to some special abilities such as detonating bombs which can clear pathways through blocks or destroying enemies such as rats or snakes which may otherwise hinder progress. Players also need to be careful not to let their lemmings fall too far or drown in water as they will die if either happens. As the game progresses, levels become increasingly difficult with different environmental hazards being added such as fireballs or spikes which must be avoided.

The graphics in Lemmings are quite simple but still effective in conveying what is happening on screen. The bright colours used give it a cheerful look while still providing enough detail so that players can easily identify each obstacle and skill available at any given time. The music also adds an extra layer of charm with its upbeat melodies helping create an enjoyable atmosphere throughout every level no matter how difficult it may seem at first glance.

Lemmings is often considered one of the best puzzle games ever released for the NES due to its unique gameplay mechanics and challenging levels which require quick thinking and precise execution in order for success. Although there have been numerous sequels over the years none have managed to capture the original’s charm and sense of satisfaction when finally completing a tricky level after multiple attempts. For anyone looking for an old school puzzle experience with plenty of challenge then Lemmings is definitely worth checking out!
