Dr. Mario is an action puzzle video game released by Nintendo for the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) in 1990. It was created by Gunpei Yokoi and developed and published by Nintendo, and it has become one of the most popular puzzle games of all time. The game stars Mario, who is a doctor, as he attempts to rid the Mushroom Kingdom of various viruses that have taken over.

The gameplay in Dr. Mario is similar to Tetris but with its own unique twist; instead of fitting blocks together to make lines, the player must stack differently colored pills in order to eliminate viruses. The player controls Mario and must maneuver him around the playing field in order to line up the pills correctly so that they match up with three or more of the same color virus on the screen. When all of the viruses are eliminated, the level is complete and a new level begins with more difficult challenges.

Dr. Mario also features several power-ups which can be used to help clear out levels faster or gain extra points. These include lightning bolts which will clear out a whole row or column of viruses at once; bombs which will destroy any pill that it touches; and special vitamins which will increase your score if collected before they disappear offscreen.

The game also features two different modes: single-player mode where you play against computer-controlled opponents, and two-player mode where you compete against another human opponent either locally or over a modem connection using a Game Link Cable (sold separately). The two-player mode adds an element of competition between friends as both players try to eliminate their viruses faster than each other in order to win the game.

Over its 30 year history, Dr. Mario has remained one of Nintendo’s most beloved franchises with multiple sequels being released for various consoles including Game Boy, Super NES, Game Boy Color, GameCube, Wii U, Switch and even mobile devices like iOS and Android. There have been several spinoff titles as well such as Dr Luigi for Wii U which added an extra layer of challenge by introducing differently shaped pills into the mix as well as Puzzle League DS which combined elements from both Tetris and Dr Mario into one package for maximum puzzle fun!

In recent years there has been an increasing demand for classic video games like Dr Mario being rereleased on modern platforms such as PC’s or smartphones so that fans can enjoy them again without having access to original hardware or software from decades ago. This demand has led to many rereleases such as “Dr Mario World” for iOS/Android devices which allows players to experience this classic title on modern devices anytime they want!

For many people Dr Mario is not just a game but part of their childhood memories growing up playing this timeless classic on their NES console back in 1990 when it first came out - making it one of those rare titles that stands test of time after 30 years!
