Boy and His Blob: Trouble on Blobolonia is a 1989 NES platform game developed by David Crane and published by Absolute Entertainment. The game stars an unnamed boy and his blob-like companion, the titular blob. Together, they set out on a mission to save the Blobolonian people from an evil emperor.
The game begins with the boy receiving a mysterious package containing a strange pink blob from outer space. After introducing himself, the blob reveals that he is from the planet Blobolonia and needs assistance in overthrowing their tyrannical ruler, the Emperor, who has enslaved his people. The boy agrees to help, and sets off with his new friend on an adventure across multiple levels.
The gameplay involves guiding the boy through various side-scrolling levels while avoiding enemies, obstacles and traps. The boy can also collect jelly beans which are used to feed the blob in order to transform him into various forms like ladders, trampolines or bridges that can be used to progress further in the level. In addition to this, there are also hidden bonus levels which can be accessed by finding secret doors scattered throughout each level. As well as providing extra points for completing them successfully, these bonus levels also provide helpful items such as extra lives and energy boosts for completing them successfully.
The game features colorful graphics along with catchy music composed by Mark Van Hecke that adds to its charm. It was praised for its unique gameplay mechanics and its visuals were considered ahead of its time for an 8-bit console game at the time of its release in 1989.
