The Sega Master System (SMS) is a home video game console released by Sega in 1985. It was the first console to be released outside of Japan and North America and was designed to compete with the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES). The SMS was initially unsuccessful due to its limited library of games, but it eventually gained popularity in Europe and Brazil.

The Sega Master System is powered by an 8-bit Zilog Z80 processor, which runs at 3.54 MHz. It has 64KB of RAM and 16KB of VRAM, which allows for a maximum resolution of 256x192 pixels. The SMS also includes two 8-bit Texas Instruments SN76489 sound chips that offer three tone channels and one noise channel, as well as a separate FM synthesis chip. The system can output audio through either RF or composite video cables, or through an optional 3.5mm headphone jack.

The SMS comes with two controller ports, allowing for up to four players to play simultaneously. Each port is compatible with both the original Sega controllers and third-party controllers such as the Konami HyperShot or QuickShot Turbo controllers. Games are stored on cartridges that plug into the top of the system; these carts contain up to 4MB of data and can be used with either NTSC or PAL systems.

The SMS was originally released with 16 games in Japan, but this number grew to include over 1000 titles worldwide by 1992 when production ended. These games span multiple genres including sports, racing, platformers, adventure games, shooters, puzzle games, fighting games and educational titles. Some popular titles include Alex Kidd: High-Tech World, Out Run Europa and Wonder Boy III: Monster Lair—all classics that still hold up today!

One unique feature of the Sega Master System is its expansion port on the bottom front of the unit; this allowed gamers to connect accessories such as light guns (the Light Phaser) or joysticks (the Control Stick). In addition to these accessories there were several peripherals available for purchase such as the 3D glasses (SG-2000), FM Sound Unit (SF-7000) and even an external floppy disk drive (FD-10).
