Pirates of Dark Water was a Sega Genesis/Mega Drive game that was released in 1995. It was based on the Hanna-Barbera animated TV show of the same name which had originally aired between 1991 and 1993. The game puts players in control of three heroes – Ren, Ioz, and Tula – as they explore the world of Mer, a planet where strange creatures roam and hidden treasures await to be found. Players must journey across seven seas while attempting to recover the thirteen powerful gems known as The Thirteen Treasures of Rule before they fall into the wrong hands.
The game features eight stages, each with their own set of challenges for players to overcome. The first five levels take place in various dungeons, castles and tombs, with players navigating narrow pathways and avoiding dangerous enemies such as giant spiders, skeletal warriors and giant eels. As they make their way through these areas, Ren’s group can collect pieces of treasure which will help them progress further throughout their journey. After completing a level, players may find that they have not collected all pieces available within it; returning to uncover any remaining pieces is advised so that they may proceed towards recovering The Thirteen Treasures of Rule.
The final three stages take place on board a pirate ship where two important tasks must be completed: solving puzzles onboard the vessel to free it from being captured by Bloth’s forces; and protecting the White Envoy from attack from powerful enemies such as giant sea turtles and octopi. Once these tasks are complete, Ren and his group reach land again to finish off Bloth’s forces before finding the whereabouts of The Thirteen Treasures of Rule themselves.
Throughout their voyage, Ren can upgrade his battle gear with a multitude of items collected during their travels including weapons like swords or axes; armour such as helmets or shields; healing items like herbs; various health upgrades; keys used to open locked paths - all affording Ren greater protection against enemy forces encountered along the way or improving his speed or attack strength in battle scenarios.
Graphically Pirates Of Dark Water is an attractive title although its sound effects are quite limited compared to other games available at its time. Although repetitive gameplay eventually sets in Pirate Of Dark Water remains an enjoyable enough title overall for fans looking for a platforming adventure set against a backdrop spanning seven deadly seas.
