Nightmare on Elm Street is an action-adventure platformer video game developed and published by LJN for the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) in 1989. It is based on the 1984 horror film of the same name and follows protagonist Nancy Thompson as she attempts to save her friends from Freddy Krueger, a disfigured serial killer who uses nightmares to murder his victims.

The game features side-scrolling levels with platforming elements, where Nancy must navigate her way through various environments while avoiding traps, enemies, and other dangers. She can attack enemies with a variety of weapons such as daggers, boomerangs, and holy water. Throughout each level are power-ups that can increase her health or give her special abilities like double jump or increased speed. Each level culminates in a boss fight against one of Freddy’s minions such as his glove or spiders. Defeating these bosses will reward Nancy with clues that she can use to progress further into the game.

The gameplay is divided between two types of levels: dream levels and reality levels. In dream levels, Nancy must traverse surreal environments such as dark forests or ghostly castles while avoiding deadly obstacles like spike pits and lava pools. These levels require quick reflexes and careful planning in order to make it out alive. Reality levels are more straightforward platforming sections where Nancy must avoid traps and enemies in order to reach the end of the level unscathed. Both types of levels feature puzzles that must be solved in order for Nancy to progress further in the game.

The goal of Nightmare on Elm Street is to collect all 7 pieces of Freddy’s skeleton so that they can be burned at the junkyard before he has a chance to regain his physical form and continue terrorizing Elm Street once again. To do this, Nancy must explore each level thoroughly while gathering items and solving puzzles along the way. Once all 7 pieces are collected, she will have successfully defeated Freddy Krueger for good!

Nightmare on Elm Street is an excellent example of classic 8-bit gaming at its finest, combining intense platforming action with horror elements that still resonate today. The game’s graphics are detailed yet simple; its soundtrack is haunting yet catchy; its controls are tight yet responsive; and its story is engaging yet mysterious enough to keep players coming back for more! With these qualities combined, Nightmare on Elm Street remains an iconic NES classic that should not be missed by any fan of horror games or retro gaming alike!
