Batman is an action-adventure video game developed and published by Sunsoft for the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) in 1990. Based on the 1989 film of the same name, it was released in Japan on June 23, 1990, and in North America on October 5, 1990. The game follows the plot of the movie closely, with some differences. Players take control of Batman as he attempts to thwart his arch-nemesis The Joker from taking over Gotham City using a combination of martial arts combat and puzzle solving.

Players traverse eight levels across four distinct areas: Axis Chemical Plant, Gotham Cathedral, Flugelheim Museum and finally Axis Chemicals where players confront The Joker. In each level, Batman must battle various enemies such as generic thugs, clowns and robots while gathering items such as keys and grappling hooks that can be used to progress through the level. At certain points throughout the game Batman will face off against one of three bosses; Bob The Goon at Axis Chemical Plant, Giant Penny at Gotham Cathedral and The Joker himself at Axis Chemicals.

Gameplay consists mainly of side-scrolling platforming with occasional top-down exploration sections that require players to guide Batman around a maze or solve puzzles in order to progress further into the level. Throughout the levels there are several items that can be collected such as extra lives or health power ups. At certain points during each level players must use their grappling hook to climb walls or ceilings which are inaccessible via normal means. Combat is handled using a variety of punches and kicks which can be used to defeat enemies or break objects such as boxes containing items for collection.

Batman for NES is generally well received by critics who praised its graphics and audio although some criticized its difficulty level which could lead to frustration for less experienced players. It is often considered one of the best games based on a movie released for NES due to its faithful recreation of characters from the film along with its varied gameplay elements which make it a challenging yet enjoyable experience overall.
