Spider-Man and Venom: Maximum Carnage is a side-scrolling beat 'em up video game developed and produced by Acclaim Entertainment. It was released for the Sega Genesis Mega Drive in 1994. The title was based on a story arc from Marvel Comic’s Spider-Man comics, called "Maximum Carnage".
The plot follows Spider-Man and Venom as they attempt to stop the carnage caused by Cletus Kasady and his symbiote allies Shriek, Doppelganger, Demogoblin, and Carrion. Spider-Man has teamed up with Venom because they understand that both of their powers are necessary in order to put an end to the chaos that has been caused.
Players take control of either Spider-Man or Venom through 14 levels, each consisting of various platforming segments interspersed with various enemies melee attacks. The player can attack enemies using regular punches and kicks, but attacks can also be enhanced by special moves such as jumping kicks and web shots. After defeating enemies, power ups may be available which will enhance your character's attack power or health. Additionally there are other items such as web cartridges which replenish webshooters allowing you to use web attacks more often.
Dynamic cutscenes were featured in each level with voice acting performed by some of the original actors from Marvel Comics' animated series of the same era. There were two difficulty settings; Regular and Carnage mode; which had no differences except for enemy strength being stronger on carnage mode than the regular one. Controllers supported both one or two players gameplay so it could be played either solo or cooperatively.
Overall, Spider-Man & Venom: Maximum Carnage was generally well received with an average score from critics based on its fluid gameplay as well as faithfulness to its source material's content. Critics also praised the graphics for being detailed enough to capture the comic action despite the console's limited capabilities at the time. Although Maximum Carnage was built on a fairly basic engine compared to many other games featured during that period, it still remains popular even today among hardcore Marvel fans due its gripping storyline capturing a tumultuous psychological exploration between Peter Parker and his arch nemesis (Venom).
