King of the Monsters is a 1991 fighting game developed by SNK for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System (SNES). The game features a unique twist on traditional fighting games, allowing players to take control of giant monsters in an attempt to become the King of the Monsters.

The game takes place in a fictional world where six giant monsters have risen up and are wreaking havoc across the planet. In order to restore peace, two players must select one of these giant beasts and battle it out until there is only one left standing. The goal of each player is to defeat all five opponents before they themselves are defeated, thus becoming the King of the Monsters.

Players can choose from six different monsters, each with their own unique strengths and weaknesses. These include Geon (a humanoid robot), Gomora (a dinosaur-like creature), Astro Guy (a robotic alien), Alien Zetton (an alien creature), Mammoth Kong (a mammoth-like creature) and Cyber Woo (an evil cyborg). All monsters possess various attacks such as punches, kicks, energy blasts and grapple moves which can be used to damage or weaken opponents. Some monsters also have special abilities that can be used strategically during battle.

The battles take place on a scrolling 2D arena that scrolls either horizontally or vertically depending on which monster is currently engaged in combat. Each stage also contains obstacles such as buildings or other structures that can be destroyed by either player’s attacks. This adds an extra layer of strategy as players must use their environment to their advantage when engaging in combat.

King of the Monsters offers two different modes of play: single-player and two-player versus mode. In single-player mode, players must fight through all six enemies before facing off against the final boss character – a powerful alien entity known as “Great Oni” who serves as the ultimate challenge for any aspiring monster master. In two-player versus mode, players can face off against each other directly in order to determine who is truly worthy of being crowned King of the Monsters.

In addition to its exciting gameplay mechanics, King of the Monsters also boasts some impressive visuals for its time period thanks to its detailed sprites and vibrant color palette. The soundtrack also helps build an atmosphere of suspenseful intensity throughout each battle making it one of SNK’s most beloved titles from this era.

Overall, King of the Monsters is an excellent example of how far fighting games had come since their inception in arcades during the 1980s. Its unique blend of strategy and action makes it stand out among other titles from this era while still managing to remain enjoyable even today – over 25 years later!
