Area 88 is a side-scrolling shooter video game released for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System (SNES) in 1992. The game was based on a Japanese manga series of the same name by Kaoru Shintani which ran from 1979 to 1986. The game follows the story of Shin Kazama, a former fighter pilot for the Royal Air Force who has been tricked into joining a mercenary air force known as Area 88. Players take control of Shin as he battles his way through an array of enemies in order to escape from Area 88 and return home.

The gameplay in Area 88 takes place over eight stages, each with its own distinct mission objectives. In each stage, players must battle enemy forces such as helicopters, tanks and fighter jets in order to progress. Players have access to an array of weapons including missiles, bombs and machine guns which can be used to take down enemies or destroy buildings. The player’s aircraft is also equipped with a shield which can be used to absorb some damage from enemy fire. As players progress through each stage they will encounter boss fights which require quick reflexes and strategic thinking in order to defeat them.

In addition to the main single-player mode, Area 88 also includes two multiplayer modes; one versus mode where two players can compete against each other and one co-op mode where up to four players can team up and tackle missions together. The game also features an unlockable bonus stage which requires players to complete all eight stages before it becomes available.

The graphics in Area 88 are quite basic but still manage to capture the feel of the anime series with its bright colours and detailed sprites. The music is also well done with catchy tunes that fit perfectly with the action on screen.

Overall, Area 88 is an enjoyable shooter experience for fans of both the anime series and side-scrolling shooters alike. With its intense action sequences, challenging boss fights and multiplayer modes, there is plenty here for gamers looking for some classic arcade fun on their SNES console.
