The Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) was a revolutionary gaming console released in the late 1980s. It was responsible for bringing video games into the mainstream and creating a global phenomenon. One of the most iconic titles released on the NES was Renegade, a beat ‘em up developed and published by Technos Japan Corp. in 1986.

Renegade tells the story of protagonist, a martial arts expert named Mr. K who has taken it upon himself to rescue his girlfriend from a gang of thugs called The Gang of Five. Players take control of Mr. K as he fights his way through various stages filled with enemies, obstacles, and traps in order to reach his goal. The game uses an overhead perspective which allows players to see all enemy characters on screen at once and anticipate their movements.

Game-play consists of running left or right while attacking enemies with punches, kicks, or weapons dropped by defeated foes such as whips or knives. Special attacks can also be used by pressing certain combinations of buttons simultaneously. As players progress through each stage they must defeat several waves of enemies before being able to move onto the next area.

In addition to its unique game-play elements, Renegade is also noteworthy for its vibrant visuals and catchy soundtrack which both add to its overall atmosphere and charm. The graphics are colorful and detailed enough that each character type is easily distinguishable from one another adding further depth to the experience. The music is composed by Kazuo Sawa who created some memorable tunes that perfectly capture the tone and feel of the game’s world.

Renegade has received positive reviews from critics since its release and continues to be praised for its innovative design and addicting game-play mechanics even today. Its legacy lives on as it has been ported multiple times throughout various platforms including iOS devices, Xbox Live Arcade, PlayStation Network, Virtual Console and more recently Nintendo Switch Online service in 2020 making it accessible to new generations of gamers around the world.
