Jack Nicklaus Greatest 18 Holes of Major Championship Golf is a golfing video game released for the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) in 1989. It was developed and published by Rare Ltd. for the NES and PAL regions, as well as the Commodore 64 and ZX Spectrum platforms, under license from Nicklaus Multimedia.

Players take on the role of professional golfer Jack Nicklaus, and must complete eighteen holes at six different courses based on real-life major championship venues. These include Augusta National Golf Club (home to The Masters), Royal Troon Golf Club (host to The Open Championship), St Andrews Links (host to The Open Championship), Pebble Beach Golf Links (host to the U.S. Open), Oakmont Country Club (host to the U.S. Open) and Baltusrol Golf Club (host to the PGA Championship). Players have a choice of three levels of difficulty: Amateur, Professional or Champion; with each level featuring a different set of rules and conditions that affect gameplay such as wind strength, ball trajectory and club selection.

Gameplay involves using the d-pad to move an aiming cursor around a 2D overhead view of each hole before selecting a club and taking their shot; with power being determined by how long players hold down the B button before releasing it. Players can also rotate their aim left or right with A/B buttons respectively, while pressing Select allows them access to their inventory which includes clubs, balls, tees, sand wedges and putters; all of which can be selected by pressing A or B when highlighted in yellow text. Other features include an auto-save feature after completing each hole, an option for adjusting background music volume levels and a scorecard at the end of each round which displays scores for up to four players at once.

In terms of visuals, Jack Nicklaus Greatest 18 Holes features simple 8-bit graphics with minimal animation; however its main appeal lies in its realistic gameplay mechanics which simulate real world golfing scenarios such as wind strength and ball trajectory accurately enough that experienced players can hone their skills on virtual versions of famous courses without having to leave home. Overall it’s an enjoyable experience that still holds up today thanks to its timeless design principles – making it a great retro gaming experience for fans of golf simulation titles or those looking for something more than just a casual time waster.
