Donkey Kong is an iconic video game developed by Nintendo and released in 1981 for the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES). It was one of the first games to feature a protagonist, Mario, who had to battle against an antagonist, Donkey Kong. The game was such a success that it spawned numerous sequels and spin-offs over the years.

The objective of the game is simple: players must navigate Mario through a series of platforms while avoiding obstacles and enemies. At the end of each level, Mario must confront Donkey Kong and rescue Pauline from his clutches. The levels become increasingly difficult as they progress; with more obstacles, enemies and traps appearing as you go along.

The original version of Donkey Kong featured four levels: 25m, 50m, 75m and 100m. In the 25m level, Mario must climb ladders to reach higher platforms while avoiding barrels thrown by Donkey Kong. In the 50m level, Donkey Kong has reinstated his barrels but this time they roll down slopes instead of being thrown directly at Mario. On top of this, there are also fireballs which move around randomly on some levels making them challenging to avoid. The 75m level introduces elevators which can take Mario up or down platforms quickly but with great risk as he could be crushed if not careful when using them. Finally in the 100m level players face off against Donkey Kong directly in order to save Pauline from him.

In addition to these four levels there were also two additional “bonus” rounds which allowed players to earn extra points by completing certain tasks within a set time limit before returning back to their main game play screen. These bonus rounds included shooting targets with marbles or catching bouncing balloons with a net for points respectively.

The success of Donkey Kong led to its sequel titled “Donkey Kong Jr” being released in 1982 for NES as well as a number of other versions being released for different platformers throughout the years including Game Boy Color (1999) and Wii U (2013). It also spawned several spin-off titles such as “Donkey Kong Country” (1994) which introduced new characters like Diddy kong and King K Rool who have since gone on to become fan favorites among gamers worldwide.

All in all Donkey Kong is an important part of gaming history due to its pioneering use of characters and its ability to captivate audiences with its simple yet addictive gameplay mechanics even after almost 40 years since it was first released on NES consoles back in 1981
