Athena is an action-adventure platformer video game developed and published by SNK for the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES). It was released in Japan in March 1987, North America in October 1988, and Europe in 1989. The game follows the story of a young girl named Athena who must traverse through eight levels to reach her ultimate goal: The Temple of Zeus. Along the way she must defeat various enemies and bosses, collect power-ups and coins, and find keys to unlock doors.

Players control Athena as she runs, jumps, and swings her sword to defeat enemies. She can also use special items such as bombs or magic wands to help her progress through the levels. As she progresses through each level there are multiple paths that can be taken which leads to some interesting puzzles that must be solved in order to progress. Athena has three lives with which to complete each level before having to start over again from the beginning of the level; however, players can continue their progress by finding checkpoints located throughout each level.

Athena’s main weapon is her sword which can be used for both attacking enemies directly as well as reflecting enemy projectiles back at them. She also has an array of special items including bombs that can clear out large groups of enemies at once, magic wands that give temporary invincibility or extra damage against certain enemies, and coins which can be collected to buy helpful items from shops found throughout certain levels. Additionally, Athena can find secret passages hidden within certain walls which lead to bonus areas where various power-ups or additional coins can be found.

Athena’s journey takes her across eight distinct levels ranging from forests filled with dangerous creatures like giant spiders and flying bats all the way up into the heavens where she will face off against powerful gods such as Zeus himself. Each level presents its own unique set of challenges including tricky platforming sections as well as intense boss battles that require quick reflexes and clever strategies in order to overcome them. Upon completing all eight levels Athena will finally reach her ultimate goal: The Temple of Zeus where she will confront him one on one in a final showdown!

Athena has been praised for its beautiful visuals, catchy soundtrack, challenging gameplay, and intricate level design making it a classic NES title beloved by many retro gamers around the world even today! Although it may not have been one of SNK’s most successful titles it still holds a special place among fans thanks to its unique blend of action-adventure elements combined with puzzle solving elements creating an experience unlike any other on the NES at the time!
